Science Habitat Website Learning

Taylor – Some animals aren’t perfect for all the weather like a polar bear are not perfect in hot, but they are good for cold because they have thick fur and the arctic is cold and they blend in.

Kaelan – Hawks eat different kinds of snakes.  Penguins need water to survive.

Jolene – A kind of bird needs a certain tree to survive.

Ashley – Camels have water in their stomach and store it in there.

Nathan – When birds poo, the snails eat their parasites because they think it is food then the snails body gets taken over by the parasites and they aren’t in control of their body and makes it easier for the birds to eat.

Emma – I found out that dolphins can go under water for a long time.

Jessica – I found out that there would be a flower, and a bee would suck the pollen of the flower and then the fish would eat the bee and a bigger fish would eat that fish and then a seagull would eat the bigger fish.  This is a food chain.

Heidi – Catusfly bugs eat algae off the bottom of ponds and lakes.

Salina – I found out that penguins don’t have to live in really cold places as long as they have fish.

Addy – I thought that most reptiles lived in the jungle but it said on the computer that most live in the desert.

Tristan – I learned that Komodo dragons have 2 habitats.  One is for the babies and one is for the adults.

Tyson – Alligators can grow up to 15 feet long or bigger.

S.S. Research

Jonathon – Yesterday we started Golgster.  The grade 3’s couldn’t get to it because our emails didn’t work.

Jolene – I feel good that we are doing Glogster because it’s a really fun way to show your learning.

Dante – Yesterday we started Glogster and we had our own school email account.

Nathan – When I was researching I figured out that Grand Beach was voted 1 of the top ten beaches in North America.

Salina – When we started Glogster our passwords and usernames are the same that we use to log into the computer.

Taylor – Yesterday after lunch we started Glogster and before we started it we had to do some of our research.  If we finished we had to stare at our computer. When we came to the internet the teachers helped us to get there but the gr 4’s could do it and the grade 3’s didn’t work out too well.

Addy – I feel excited to start Glogster because I think it is cool that you get to put facts, pictures and videos on it.  My topic for research is Nellie Mcclung.

Tristan – After lunch yesterday we stated Glogster. The grade 4’s got on good, but the grade 3’s didn’t.

Science Scavenger Hunt
Maddox – First we went out with our problem solving buddy and this time we hoped it would work and we went around and there was a clue that we had to answer and the answer would lead us to the next clue.  At the end we found out that the answer to the scavenger hunt was habitats.
Sydney – We went on a scavenger hunt and we had our problem solving partners and mine was Sofia.  We went through the clues and on the last one we thought we missed one but it leads us back to the room we started in.
Emma – On a Wednesday we did a scavenger hunt, we went from room to room and it didn’t work for me because I missed one clue.  We got lost.
Stacy – When we had a scavenger hunt we had to go room to room and solve the problem and it was a math problem and whatever the number was you had to go to that room.
Kaelan – We had a scavenger hunt and some of the questions you had to answer was a money question, a pattern question or subtraction question. My problem solving partner was Brooke and at the end we figured out the big idea was Habitats and the three little ideas was soil, plants and animals.
Sofia – On Wednesday we had science about habitats.  Some of the habitats are the forest, rainforest, arctic, mountain, desert, lakes and ponds, ocean, and grasslands.  We did an activity with it and after with animal crackers.  After we did the activity we got to eat the crackers.

Writing Continuum
Sydney – Today we are finishing our writing continuum, we are doing our good copy.  We are writing our goals, to help us with our writing.
Sofia – Our writing continuum is when there is a big sheet that has levels on it and you read it over with your Birds Hill writing and if you got to page 13 and you forgot to do 1 thing then you are on page 13.  We get a blue page you have to write where you are on the writing continuum and Mrs. Kosolowski has to agree with you if you are there.  We do a good copy.
Kaelan – We are doing our good copy of our writing continuum goals and I am on page 11.  My goal is to describe my feelings and my thinking in my writing.
Stacy – My goal for writing is to add more detail in my writing.
Emma – My goal for writing is to use periods.
Heidi – I am starting to use paragraphs to organize my thoughts.

Haunted House

Jolene – We are making a haunted house.  Ours doesn’t look that scary yet because we haven’t added that much yet.

Sofia – We just started building our haunted houses yesterday and we started building it with shoe boxes and lots of tape and you have to bring in things to put in your haunted house.

Dylan – The next time we are making out haunted house is Thursday.

Emma – Yesterday we started building our haunted house with our partner and we are working really hard on them and everyone’s is going to look good!

Matthew – Yesterday we started building haunted houses.  We were making them out of show boxes that we had to bring them in and we brought in our own material.

Jonathon – Yesterday we started building haunted houses.  My partner was Tristan. We are almost done but not just yet.  We will probably be done by the end of building time.

Kaelan – Today we built haunted houses.  My partners are Chass and Brandyn.  We are almost done, we have finished most of the rooms.

Heidi – Starting at 9:35 we started with making 5 French sentences and then we got to build.

Brooke – Today we were building our haunted house for the first 2 periods of the day.  We also made 5 French sentences and my partner is Emma.  We just have to finish doing the attic.

Maddox – All of our French tests have lead up to this.  Now it is haunted house building time!

Jessica – On Tuesday we started building haunted houses and also today.  On Tuesday we just taped boxes and now we are starting to add detail in it and it is a lot of fun!

Tyson – This week we started our haunted house and Matthew and I worked with my dad the first day and my dad helped us a lot. He did the hot glue for us and a lot of spider webs.  Matthew was obsessed with the cob webs and mice.  Matthew really liked mice and he would tangle them up in the cob webs.  I made a coffin and I put a little skull on it and I wrote R.I.P. on it.

Dante – We started building the haunted house and we have had 2 building times already.  Grade 3’s are working with grade 3’s and grade 4’s are working with grade 4’s.

Taylor – In the first 2 periods we got to build our haunted house.  My partners are Jolene and Emma and we are almost done.  We just have to put in a couple more things.

Mrs. Kosolowski – After next week, the students will be presenting their haunted house and 10 sentences to their classmates!  Good luck!

New Science Unit

Brooke – On the scavenger hunt today, it got a little confusing because the pieces weren’t in the right spot.   My partner was Kaelan and we did not find all the puzzle pieces.  The three big ideas we are going to be learning about in science are soil, plants and animals.  At the end we got salad with our choice of toppings.
Sydney – Today we went on a scavenger hunt and my partner was Sofia.  We didn’t final all the puzzle pieces so we got the rest after.  We had to put the puzzle together and glue it on a paper.  After we did all that we got to make a salad.  We got to pick toppings like bacon bits, croutons, dressing and lettuce and vegetables.  It was yummy!
Jessica – Today we went on a scavenger hunt and my partner was Taylor.  We didn’t get to finish it all but we did most of it.  It was really fun to do and at the end we got salad.
Tristan – This morning we went on a scavenger hunt and we had to find all kinds of puzzle pieces. The purple paper had math clues on them that we had to figure out.  The paper added to a number and that was the room we went to next.
Kaelan – The 3rd and 4th period we did a scavenger hunt and some of the clues weren’t there so we got them in the classroom and after we figured the puzzle out we got salad and Nathan accidentally pushed his chair back and I got dressing all over my shirt.
Taylor – Just before lunch we had a scavenger hunt and the first place we went was room 5 because we had to start off in our classroom.  One group was with us the whole time and that was Heidi and Jolene.  We got to one place and we had to answer a question.  We finished in our room and we ate salad just before lunch and when lunch started I was kind of full.
Maddox – Today we had a big scavenger hunt. First, different kids started at different places in the school.  We had mathematical problems to solve and the number that answered the question was the next room you had to go to.  After the puzzle was built we had to come up with 3 big ideas and we ate salad.
Dante – When we came to school this morning we had a scavenger hunt all around the school.  We got 3 bags, 2 for puzzle pieces and 1 to put the used clues in.  We also got a map of the school and needed a pencil.  We went all over to collect clues.  The three main ideas were soil, animals and plants.  It all connected to our habitats.
Ashley – Today we had a scavenger hunt in the morning and my partner was Tyson and me got one really hard question and we got confused.  When we got back we got to eat salad.
Jonathon – Today we had a scavenger hunt and my partner was Stacy and the first place we started was in room 5 which took us to room 7.  We didn’t get all the pieces but once the time was up we came to the classroom and got the rest of the pieces to build the puzzle.  Then we had to write down 3 big ideas.  Then we got salad with toppings and it was yummy.
Addy – In the AM we went on a scavenger hunt to find out what our new unit was for science and we went with our problem solving partners.  We got an equation to solve and whatever the number was to fill in was the room you had to go to and then get a new equation.  When the time was up you had to come back to the room and figure out the puzzle and figure out the 3 topics for the new unit.
Matthew – Today we had a scavenger hunt in the morning and I was with Emma and she kept calling me smarty pants.
Sofia – Today we went on a scavenger hunt.  At each door there was a question and you would have to answer the question to move to the next room.
Emma – Today we went on a scavenger hunt and I didn’t get all the pieces.  I knew where one was, it was in the office but it was supposed to be in the gym but I don’t know why it was in the office.
Tyson – Today there was a scavenger hunt.  My partner was Ashley we got all twelve puzzle pieces.
Salina – Today we had a scavenger hunt and my partner was Addy.  We had to get one puzzle piece for you and your partner and you also needed a purple slip of paper with a math question on it.  You had to solve it to figure out where to go and at the end we had salad.
Stacy – Today we had a scavenger hunt and when we got to Mrs. Kosolowski’s room we got to eat salad.

Birds Hill Field Trip
THANKS TO THE STUDENTS FOR A WONDERFUL DAY OF FUN AND LEARNING!
YOU ARE AN AWESOME BUNCH OF KIDS!

Addy – There was sunscreen type stuff on the Aspen trees.
Jolene – We walked the trail twice and the second time the park interpreter talked about things on the trail.
Nathan – When we were studying rocks and minerals, I learned that rocks can come from magma, to lava, to rock.
Dante – It was cool to learn about the sunscreen on the Aspen trees and how they use it in the winter.  We also learned about the chickadees and how they don’t fly south for the winter.
Tristan – At the interpretive centre we saw stuffed birds and we saw skeletons and bones and we saw a stuffed lynx.
Taylor – When we were going on the walk the second time we stopped and talked about the black fungus on some of the cherry trees that they only go on.  The chickadees in the winter eat the bugs that live in the black fungus.
Maddox – On the second time we went on the trail we learned something about beavers.  They can not digest the wood completely so they have to eat it a second time once it comes out.
Sydney – Today when we were playing after lunch there was a big hole and we saw a garter snack in it.
Heidi –On the second time around the trail we learned about chickadees and what their call was and that the male chickadees find places to live with the best stuff and call the females chickadees and all of the girls are called Susan.
Tyson – If you eat the black fungus you will poop till you are dead.
Emma – When we were on the walk we learned about the chickadees and we found out that the boys have to do all the work and the girls just sit down.
Sofia – There was this type of church called a sweat lodge and the aboriginal people have their church in the nature.
Ashley – Today we went on a scavenger hunt and I saw a nest.
Jessica – The first time we went on the walk in groups we found this case in a tree that someone used for geocaching and it said 5 on it.

Jonathon – Today was very hot and I kind of wanted cooler weather.

Learning Log

Addy – We are starting learning logs this week.

Dante – We do 1 choice for one week and we bring it back on Monday.

Sofia – There are 4 choices and one of them is problem solving and we do it alone but in school we do it with a partner.

Stacy – One of the choices is about the week and you write the entire page about your week.

Emma – You have to bring them back when the week is over. On Monday.

Jessica – A little while ago we learned about research, which is one of the activities and we practiced it at school about 4 times and now we are used to it.

Kaelan – One of the topics is comprehension questions, so you grab a chapter book or picture book and you read to someone in your family and they have to write down 3 questions and you have to answer them.  You answer them using the question in the sentence.  NO one word answers.

Brooke – Today we did our last page of the learning log so we can start the learning log next week.

Nathan – Today we learned how to do problem solving and next week we get to start our learning logs.

Taylor – For our learning logs we know all the jobs and the four jobs are writing about your week or weekend, comprehension questions, problem solving and research.  We will bring it home next week.
